Outcomes of Total Aortic Arch Replacement in a Canadian Nationwide Registry

This multicenter study compares outcomes of 250 elective total arch replacements with 728 elective hemiarch replacements in Canada, using propensity score matching to create 202 well-matched pairs. Findings reveal that while in-hospital mortality rates for total arch replacement are comparable to hemiarch repairs, total arch replacement is associated with higher rates of complications such as delirium and prolonged intubation.

The Usefulness of Contrast Echocardiography in the Evaluation of Cardiac Masses: A Multicenter Study

This study evaluates the diagnostic accuracy of Contrast Echocardiography (CE) in differentiating between thrombi, benign, and malignant cardiac masses, using a multicenter prospective approach on 145 patients. The results indicate high accuracy of CE, with optimal A1/A2 cutoff values showing strong sensitivity and specificity in distinguishing different types of cardiac masses.

Techniques and Technologies to Improve Vein Graft Patency in Coronary Surgery

Vein grafts, commonly used in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), have lower patency rates than arterial options, and this review examines methods to improve their quality, identifying preoperative and postoperative therapies and no-touch harvesting as most effective. Additionally, the review suggests re-doing CABG and primary coronary intervention on native vessels as the best strategies for treating vein graft failure, with percutaneous procedures as a secondary option.

The Overall Prevalence and Main Determinants of Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: A Systematic Review

This systematic review found that the prevalence of prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery ranges from 1.7% to 10.2%, depending on the definition of PMV. The study identified several predictors of PMV, including demographic factors, obesity, comorbidities, emergency surgery, intraoperative characteristics, and certain postoperative outcomes, which could help in designing new scoring systems for predicting PMV.

A Review of Top Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine Journal Guidelines regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence Tools in Scientific Writing

A review of the top 25 cardiology and cardiovascular medicine journals according to the 2023 SCImago rankings revealed that all allow the use of generative AI in scientific writing within ICMJE limitations, but prohibit AI in authorship, image generation, and peer review processes, requiring authors to take full responsibility for their work. These guidelines are standardized and followed by all studied journals, emphasizing the importance of adhering to and updating these policies to uphold scientific integrity.
