This study tested if phosphocreatine (PCr) reduces troponin I levels in cardiac surgery patients with prolonged aortic clamping and cardiopulmonary bypass. Although PCr was safely administered, it did not lead to a decrease in troponin I concentration or improve other clinical outcomes after surgery.
A novel technique for aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass grafting through left anterior minithoracotomy has been successfully used in six patients, demonstrating technical feasibility and effectiveness without major complications. This approach, which allows simultaneous valve and multivessel coronary procedures, requires further study in a larger patient population to understand its potential limitations fully.
The study describes a simulated cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) model integrated into a mock operative theater, aiming to enhance the training of novice perfusionists. Results from 81 participants indicated high fidelity and effectiveness of the simulation in replicating real CPB scenarios and skills, suggesting its potential for educational use in clinical perfusion training.
This study investigated the relationship between plasma free hemoglobin levels and changes in urine color in cardiac surgery patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass. It found that changes in urine color or increases in urinary free hemoglobin occurred considerably later than elevations in plasma free hemoglobin levels.
